I know what happens when you make a goal to yourself and it never pans out. The feeling of disappointment and failure is pretty sucky and serves no more than to make you feel bad about yourself and your capabilities. Every year millions of people make New Years Resolutions to better themselves and their lives but extremely few (around 15%) actually succeed in achieving it. What on earth is going on here?!

Why do we keep failing at our resolutions when we want so badly to change?

Well, a few reasons this happens is:

  • We make resolutions the day or week before New Years based on our emotions at that moment. I.e., we decide to cut back on sweets after we overdid it during Christmas parties or we realize that we’re heading into yet another year at a job we dislike so vow for a career change
  • Going cold turkey. We decide that we’ll never smoke another cigarette again or that starting on January 1st there’ll be no more chocolate in the house EVER
  • Not knowing what we actually want

The common factor to failing at our New Years Resolutions is that we don’t take the time to sit down and think about what it is we truly want for ourselves and plan exactly how to get it.

Whether it be to lose weight or exercise more, health related goals are the most popular New Years Resolution people make. And we make those resolutions year after year after year after year. And every year we get gym memberships, join a weight loss group, vow to never eat pizza again and every year we find ourselves back to where we were the year before, usually with a couple of extra pounds to boot. Obviously something isn’t working here so this year I want to challenge you to NEVER make that resolution again!!!

That’s right, 2012 is going to be your year! This challenge is going to set you up for success not just for the month, but, if you do the homework, the rest of your life! No joke! Each week is going to be split into the major behaviours you’ll have to look at to be able to pinpoint your goals and how to carry them through:

Week 1 – Clarity: We’ll sweep through the cobwebs in your noggin to sit down and figure out what exactly it is that you want and why you want it. Not clarifying your goals is a common mistake people make in their goal setting yet is crucial if you want to maintain your motivation!

Week 2 – Action: This week we’ll take a look at how to get you started on a regular exercise routine you’ll actually want to do as well as to teach you how to find the time in your hectic schedule in which to do it! Week 3 – Behaviour: This week we’ll tackle the behaviours necessary for you to be able to make this new healthy lifestyle PERMANENT! We’ll talk about triggers and what makes you engage in unhealthy behaviours. I’ll teach you some tricks that naturally fit people employ and how you can implement them into your own life and we’ll talk a bit about nutrition and how you don’t have to give up your favourite foods to lose weight and get fit!

Week 4 – Support: This week we’ll learn about the importance of support in our lives and how to get it! We’ll learn about sabotage; why you do it to yourself and why those who love you do it to you and what to do about it. We’ll build an action plan so that when life throws you a curveball you’ll be better able to handle it rather than slip back into your old behaviours!

Each and every day you’ll learn something new in bite sized pieces so as not to overwhelm you and you’ll be given homework that will not only help you to identify behaviours that may be holding you back but you’ll also begin to implement a fitness and nutrition regimen that excites you!
