If there’s one thing I can’t highly recommend enough when it comes to making your health and fitness goals easier, it’s utilizing your SmartPhone. With the amount of apps at your fingertips achieving your goals has never been easier or more excuse-busting! There are thousands of health and fitness apps available for you to not only find nutritious recipes and track your food but to also create a workout plan regardless of the time you have to do it or where you are.
I use my SmartPhone constantly to keep track of my goals, especially when it comes to tracking my food. I even have it set up to remind me when I haven’t tracked my food so there are no excuses!
Here are the top 5 health and fitness apps I use to keep me fit and healthy. The best part? Every single one of them is free!
RunKeeper is, obviously, a running app! It uses the GPS in your phone to track where you run, how far you run and even your pace. You can customize it to help you run races or create your training plan. You can set it to play your favourite playlists and you can customize the amount of narration you get to tell you what your pace is or how long you’ve been running without having to look at your phone. You can also set it up to run intervals so once you adjust your settings, you can tuck it away and let it do all the work! When you’re done you can check all of your stats including a map of where you ran, right on your phone! With your log-in details you can also log into the website at any time and check your stats from there as well. The website will also allow you to join virtual fitness “classes” to get training schedules and “run” with other people! This is such a fantastic app for ANYONE who loves to run or is interested in running.
My Fitness Pal
MyFitnessPal has become my go-to tracking app! It’s an extension of the popular tracking site but the app makes tracking your food and fitness a cinch! Food tracking is easy not just because you can access a database with thousands of foods but it also comes with a barcode scanner!!! This little sucker scans the barcodes of your food and all the nutritional info pops up instantly! If, like me, you tend to eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch then it becomes even easier as you can just copy meals over, my tracking for an entire day now takes less than five minutes! There are also sections for typical meals and recipes as well. You can also track your exercise which will automatically adjust your calorie intake (although I caution against eating back the calories if you’re wanting to lose weight). You can check your progress with their bar graphs, make friends and update your status all through the app itself! The best part is that you can set it up to remind you if you haven’t logged your meals! This is indispensable for those who are just getting the hang of tracking! This gem of an app has become my greatest weapon for keeping tracking of my food!
Nike Training Club
I’ve extolled the virtues of the Nike Training Club before but I’m doing it again because it’s that good! This is an app that I still shake my head at knowing that it’s free as it could easily make a TON of money if they charged for it! This app gives you 30 – 45 minute workouts based on your goals. These workouts are no joke! They’ll get you sweating, strong and lean in no time! You can keep track of your progress and earn trophies the more you use it and you can also unlock workouts from famous athletes! Seriously, if you only get one fitness app, get this one, you won’t regret it!
This is a simple gem of an app. The Tabata Timer is based off of the Tabata form of interval training created by Izumi Tabata. Tabatas require you to go balls to the wall in your preferred form of cardio for only 20 seconds and then you get a 10 second break. You repeat this 8 times for a total of only four minutes. But although it’s only four minutes, it’ll kick your ass because you really have to work HARD during those 20 seconds. This is a great workout to throw into a longer workout for an added kick or as a stand-alone workout if you don’t have any time in your day. The app itself is a simple 30 second timer, you set it up and it does the counting for you so all you need to think about is not dying during your cardio and then it’ll give you your rest. Easy peasy but if you’ve ever done a tabata workout, you’ll be super thankful for having someone else do the thinking for you!
Healthy Recipes by SparkRecipes
Aside from MyFitnessPal I’m also a big fan of SparkPeople which is another great food and exercise tracking site (with their own mobile app as well). One of their numerous apps is their Healthy Recipes app which is an offshoot of their popular SparkRecipes section. This app allows you to browse through all of their submitted recipes (submitted by Spark’s resident healthy food chef, Chef Meg as well as the thousands of recipes submitted by users). These recipes will not only give you reviews of the recipe but it’ll also give you the nutritional information and it gives you a conversion table right in the app to make things easier on you. This is a great app to have on hand while meal planning or if you’re in a pinch!
If these apps don’t convince you to start using your SmartPhone to help your achieve your health goals (or to get a SmartPhone in general) then I don’t know what will!
