Me at 250 pounds.

I weighed 180 pounds when I was 13 years old. I was constantly teased as a child for being overweight. I remember eating an entire pack of diet pills in sixth grade and waking up in tears because I was still fat. In high school I made myself invisible due to shame and by the time I was 27 years old I weighed 250 pounds. I had crippling self-esteem issues, no direction in life and little confidence. I buried my unhappiness in front of the television, eating whatever would fill the void I didn’t really know I had.

I never remembered a time when I wasn’t overweight. It became a part of who I was. I was the “fat girl” and I blamed my unhappy life on my weight. I couldn’t get a decent job because I was fat. I couldn’t get a man because men aren’t attracted to fat chicks. I was worthless simply because I was overweight. I was embarrassed as I tried to fit through turnstiles in stores and was always nervous I’d be turned away in the roller coaster lineup for being too big. I became paranoid that people were laughing at me as I walked by  and could only shop in plus sized stores. I tried every diet I could find from extremely restrictive diets to workout programs that relied on almost lamaze type breathing SOLELY to burn fat. I lost weight. I gained weight. I gained MORE weight. Nothing seemed to work!

Everything changed

Near the end of 2006, having just moved into a basement bachelor apartment after a break up, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands which meant a lot of time for thinking. I knew I was unhappy and I was sick of it. One night I was having a spectacular pity-party for myself and at one point I wondered what my future was going to be like. What I saw shocked me. It shocked me so badly that my life changed in an instant. I saw disease (cardiovascular disease runs in my family), I saw scarcity (I didn’t think I could get/deserve a decent job or have nice things), I saw loneliness (I had just been dumped) and no passion. In fact, I knew that if I didn’t do something soon, the likelihood of me dying an early, preventable death was inevitable!

This future terrified me and it was within that fear that I began the process of losing weight for the LAST TIME. I decided that if I was going to do this, I was not going to join a program, I was going to do it on my own terms because those programs didn’t work!
